Your First Visit: A Guide to Getting Started
Welcome to your boutique sanctuary beside the canal.
Embarking on your Pilates journey is a beautiful step toward balance, and we are here to make your first experience at Lock and Flow completely seamless. Our boutique reformer and mat studio is located in a tranquil, rural canal-side setting, offering a peaceful retreat from the everyday hustle. This guide is designed to help you feel prepared, confident, and excited to join our community before you even book your first class.
What to Expect During Your First Visit
We focus on making your introduction to Pilates as relaxing and clear as possible, ensuring you feel supported from the moment you step through our doors.
- A Warm Welcome: Arrival is stress-free with easy parking outside Unit 8. Please aim to arrive no more than 10 minutes before the class start time. The studio is accessed through the main door, then immediately up the stairs on your left. Once on the first floor, you will find a friendly instructor waiting to help you check in and get ready for the class.
- Personalised Setup: Before we begin, your instructor will introduce you to your equipment and ensure you feel comfortable and confident in your space.
- A Mindful Pace: Our classes move at a supportive speed, using simple language to guide you through each exercise without technical jargon.
- Options for Everyone: We provide clear modifications for every exercise, allowing you to move in a way that feels safe and right for your body.
- Boutique Attention: In our small, sanctuary-like classes, we are always close by to provide gentle encouragement and individual support throughout your practice.
How to Prepare for Your Class
Moving with us is meant to be a restorative experience. Here is a simple guide to help you feel ready and relaxed before you arrive at our studio.
- Comfortable Clothing: Wear flexible athletic wear that allows you to move freely. We suggest wearing grip socks for stability on the equipment. We will be stocking some luxurious branded grip socks in a range of sizes if you need to purchase any.
- Water & Towel: Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. You are also welcome to bring a small personal towel for your comfort during the session.
- Early Arrival: We recommend arriving 10 minutes before your class begins to park at Unit 8 and settle into the atmosphere of the studio.
- Health & Wellbeing: Your safety is our priority. Please share any injuries, health considerations, or recent surgeries with your instructor before class.
- Confirmation Reminders: Kindly review your booking email for any final reminders regarding studio access or cancellation policies.
Understanding Pilates Classes
Whether you choose the support of the reformer or the challenge of the mat, our classes are designed to meet you exactly where you are today.
- Reformer vs. Mat: Reformer Pilates uses a spring-loaded carriage to provide resistance and support, aiding alignment and strength. Mat Pilates focuses on bodyweight control and core stability, making it an excellent foundation for mindful movement.
- Flow: A gentle intro class focused on the core principles and equipment setup. This is the perfect starting point for newcomers to feel safe and supported.
- Core: A steady-paced class that balances strength and flexibility through rhythmic transitions. Ideal for those looking to build consistent confidence in their practice.
- Signature: Our stronger, more challenging option. This session is designed for those ready to deepen their stamina and explore more advanced movement patterns.
FAQs for Newcomers

Of course. Our studio is a restorative space for all. We recommend our 'Flow' classes for your first few visits, as they focus on fundamental principles and equipment setup in a supportive, gentle environment.
What if I have an injury or I’m pregnant?
Your safety is our priority. Please let your instructor know about any health considerations before the session begins; we provide clear, personalised modifications to ensure you move comfortably at every stage.
What should I wear for my first visit?
Select flexible athletic wear that allows you to move freely. For stability and hygiene on our reformers, we suggest wearing grip socks, which are also available for purchase in our studio.
